Southeastern Louisiana University
Southeastern Louisiana University is a state-funded public university in Hammond Louisiana. Southeastern was founded in 1925 by Linus A. Sims, the principal of Hammond High School. The University was first a 2 year Community College called Hammond Junior College, which was located in a wing of Hammond High. In 1928, The College moved to north Hammond and became known as Southeastern Louisiana College. It wasn't until 1970 that Southeastern achieved University status and became known as Southeastern Louisiana University.
Today, Southeastern Louisiana University has approximately 15,000 students representing 43 states and 66 countries. During the 1990's Southeastern Louisiana University was the fastest-growing college in the entire United States.

KSLU
On November 11, 1974, KSLU was started as a radio club at Southeastern Louisiana University. it operated at 10 watts of power for a few hours a day during weekdays, while the transmitter was shut off on weekends and holidays. Thanks to Student Government Association donations as well as self assessed fees from the student body, in 1983, KSLU qualified for membership for membership in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Since 1983, the station has grown to 3,000 watts, the maximum allowed due to a crowding between 88-92 MHz band.

The Southeastern Channel
The Southeastern Channel began July 9, 2002 and is Southeastern Louisiana University's Television Channel. With high-quality production and programming as its staple, the Southeastern Channel has already won over 70 national and international awards in the past four years, and is the first university channel in state history to have won an Emmy. Led by an international award-winning staff, some with decades of experience at the national television network level, the Southeastern Channel produces over 600 hours of fresh original programming each year. The channel airs over 100 hours of original programming each week, roughly 90 percent of its 24/7 schedule. Of the 1,000-plus hours of telecourses airing each year, 95 percent have been originally produced using Southeastern faculty. Each lecture for these telecourses has been archived on the Southeastern Channel's website for "Video on Demand" accessibility. A "Live Webcast" broadcasts 24/7 from the Southeastern Channel website as well.

Transportation
Located in the middle of downtown Hammond, the historic train station is still in use by Amtrak, the national passenger rail system.

Bus System
Since July 1, 2007, Hammond began a public bus system that has been very successful. The bus runs Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. The bus begins by the Hammond Airport and gradually makes its way through the rest of the city, stopping at over 50 locations including stops at Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond Square Mall, and Downtown Hammond.

Highways

A major part of Hammond's success can be drawn from its proximity to two heavily travelled interstate highways: Interstate 12, which runs from Baton Rouge to Slidell and interstate 55, which runs from Laplace (near New Orleans) to Chicago, Illinois.

Two U.S. Highways serve the city of Hammond. They are: U.S. Highway 51 (Morrison Boulevard) which parallels I-55 and goes through the city's western side, while U.S. Highway 190 (Thomas Street/Morris Avenue) parallels I-12 and goes through the city's commercial and downtown areas.
